چکیده

Recent progress is reviewed in the understanding of convective interaction with water vapor, and changes associated with water vapor in warmer climates. Progress includes new observing techniques (including isotopic methods) that are helping to illuminate moistureconvection interaction, better-observed humidity trends, new modeling approaches, and clearer expectations as to the hydrological consequences of increased specific humidity in a warmer climate. A theory appears to be in place to predict humidity in the free troposphere if winds are known at large scales, providing a crucial link between small-scale behavior and large-scale mass and energy constraints. This, along with observations, supports the anticipated water vapor feedback on climate, though key uncertainties remain connected to atmospheric dynamics and the hydrological consequences of a moister atmosphere. More work is called for to understand how circulations on all scales are governed and what role water vapor plays. Suggestions are given for future research.

Temperature–Moisture Dependence of the Deep Convective Transition as a Constraint on Entrainment in Climate Models

Properties of the transition to strong deep convection, as previously observed in satellite precipitation statistics, are analyzed using parcel stability computations and a convective plume velocity equation. A set of alternative entrainment assumptions yields very different characteristics of the deep convection onset boundary (here measured by conditional instability and plume vertical veloci...

Gravity Waves and Ionospheric Irregularities over Tropical Convection Zones observed by GPS/MET Radio Occultation

GPS/MET observations of the tropical atmosphere of the southern hemisphere (5S to 25S) during February 1997 are analysed, when a high amount of convective tropospheric water vapor is at these latitudes. Enhanced gravity wave activity of the lower stratosphere at h=22-28 km is associated to areas of increased tropospheric water vapor pressure at h=4-6 km, regarded as a measure of tropical convec...

Lightning and Climate: a Review

INTRODUCTION The importance of lightning for climate studies is increasingly recognized. Thunderstorms are major players in the global redistribution of water substance, a key mediator of both short and long wavelength radiation. The cloud buoyancy that drives vertical motion in electrified convection is of the order of 1 C. Temperature perturbations of this order have appreciable local effects...

The HDO/H2O relationship in tropospheric water vapor in an idealized “last-saturation” model

[1] Previous model studies have shown that the isotopic composition of tropospheric water vapor is sensitive to atmospheric water transport processes, but compositional information is difficult to interpret due to the complexity of the models. Here an attempt is made to clarify the sensitivity by computing the relationship between tropospheric HDO (via dD) and H2O (via specific humidity q) in a...
